Short description: The notion of syllable: the contribution of Phonetics, Phonology and Psycholinguistics. Linguistic models of the syllable. Universal properties and syllabic diversity across languages. Syllable structure in Portuguese. The role of the syllable in sound realization. The importance of the syllable and sub-syllabic constituents to (i) the acquisition of native language, (ii) phonological awareness, (iii) the teaching of Portuguese as native and non-native language, (iv) diagnosis and speech therapy, (v) writing and reading processing. Syllable types and their frequency.
