Rhythm and Melody: phonological knowledge and applications

Frota, DLGR, FLUL Short description: How different rhythm is across languages: identification and classification of rhythmic differences. The rhythmic properties of Portuguese (European and Brazilian). Rhythm and the phonetics and phonology of the language. Melodies across languages: tonal and intonational languages. Portuguese intonation: transcription and analysis. Contribution of melody to rhythm. Instruments to analyse rhythm and intonation: production, sound manipulation, perception. The role of rhythm and melody in (i) native language and second language acquisition, (ii) language teaching, (iii) speech comprehension (both by subjects without and with language problems or pathologies).
