ForensicHandsOn - A phonetic-based protocol to Forensic Speaker Comparison practices
Organizers:
Plinio Almeida Barbosa (University of Campinas)
Ana Carolina Constantini (University of Campinas)
Renata Regina Passetti (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo)
In this tutorial, we will present a phonetic-based protocol to Forensic Speaker Comparison practices developed by the Forensic Phonetics Studies Group (Unicamp, São Paulo, Brazil) in partnership with the Prosecution Service of São Paulo State. As it is known, there is a gap in forensic phonetics related to the development of analyses based on real cases and description of procedures are missing in the scientific literature (Gold and French, 2019). Therefore, the proposed protocol aims to fill this gap, since it results from analysis on forensic and lab speech data. The Protocol contains five main steps that will be demonstrated in this tutorial, namely: a) auditory-perceptual assessment; b) transcription; c) sociophonetic analysis; d) acoustic-phonetic analysis; e) statistical analysis. The software Praat will be used for all steps. Each step will be presented considering theoretical background and practical exercises, in which the participants will be able to perform a simulation of use along with the tutors. At the end, the tutors will provide an internet address to download the protocol (at present, the protocol is only available in Brazilian Portuguese, but a translation is planned).
Estimated Number of participantes: 15
Profile of the expected audience: Previous experience with acoustic analysis and interest in Forensic Phonetics.
