Each experimental method is illustrated by means of case studies reported in the literature. Various research methods applied to the same investigation topic are presented, discussed and compared.
Whenever possible, the analysis of research papers where each paradigm is used is illustrated with
video demos. A subset of the methods surveyed in the course is exemplified and trained at the Lisbon
Baby Lab (http://labfon.letras.ulisboa.pt/babylab ), so that students will also have a laboratorial hands-on
component.
Students are evaluated on the basis of the quality of the work done in class (10%), the presentation and
discussion of
an experimental article or the design of an experiment where a hypothesis is tested on a
specific issue in language
acquisition (40%), as well as a written test (50%).
