Phrasing

The P-ToBI system reflects the prosodic phrasing that characterizes the grammar of Portuguese. In other words, it takes into account the morphosyntax-to-phonology mapping, as well as phonological constraints, which are size and weight-related, together with realization constraints (e.g., rate of speech, hesitations). Thus, the break indices indicate the prosodic level of the relevant chunk of speech, regardless of the presence of a tonal mark for that particular level. In fact, most phrasing breaks in Portuguese are not tonally marked, to the exception of the Intonational Phrase.
